Sergeant First Class Alfonso Gonzalez retires

Sergeant First Class Alfonso Gonzalez recently retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ 579th Engineer Detachment (FEST-M), with 20 years of military service. He served as the Senior Construction Supervisor with the FEST-M.

 

Previous assignments include Charlie Company 46 Engineer Battalion in Fort McClelland, Ala; 47th Engineer Battalion Fort Wainwright, AK; 52nd Engineer Battalion Fort Carson, Colo.; Delta Company 169th Engineer Battalion; 18th Engineer Brigade Campbell Barracks, Germany; and the 1/289th Training Support Battalion Houston, TX.

SFC Gonzalez also served as Equal Opportunity Advisor, Observer Controller and the Noncommissioned Officer for: Training, S-3 In Charge, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, Movement and Hazardous Material.

He enlisted in the Army January 29, 1992, and attended Basic Training and Advance Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Upon graduating, he was awarded the Military Occupational Skill of Carpentry and Masonry specialist. SFC Gonzalez was promoted to Sergeant First Class on July 1, 2004.

SFC Gonzalez’s awards and decoration include the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal (6 oak leaf clusters), Achievement Medal (4 oak leaf clusters), Good Conduct Medal (6th award), National Defense Service Medal (1 bronze service star), Global War on Terror Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (2 bronze service stars), Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (numeral 3), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (numeral 4), Meritorious Unit Citation, Combat Action Badge, Air Borne Badge, Air Assault Badge, Drivers Badge and Drill Sergeant Badge.

His military education includes Primary Leadership Development Course, Air Assault Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Air Borne Course, Drill Sergeant Course, Combat Life Saver Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, First Sergeant Course, Equal Opportunity Course and Contracting Officer Representative Course. He received an associate’s degree from Pikes Peak Community College.

SFC Gonzalez is a native of Los Angeles Calif. He is married to the former Silvia Gonzalez and has two children: Alfonso J. and Eduardo A.

The Mississippi Valley Division is responsible for water resources engineering solutions in a 370,000-square-mile area, extending from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and encompassing portions of 12 states.  Work is carried out by district offices located in St. Paul, Minn.; Rock Island, Ill.; St. Louis, Mo.; Memphis, Tenn.; Vicksburg, Miss.; and New Orleans, La.

The 579th Engineer Detachment (FEST-M) is a 36-member (civilian/military hybrid) team capable of rapidly deploying to provide sustained U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) contract construction and engineering execution capabilities in support of Department of Defense and other federal agencies during war, military contingencies and disaster relief operations.
