LAKE CHARLES, La.—The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers installed the 10,000th blue roof Friday in Lake Charles as part of Operation Blue Roof emergency response for hurricanes Laura and Delta.

“I have observed firsthand the widespread damage and destruction from hurricanes Laura and Delta throughout Southwest Louisiana. Although the countless residents I have met are strong and resilient, they have been through a lot and must endure through a long recovery. We are proud to help their recovery in our small way—by keeping their homes dry and protected as they await a permanent repair”, said Col. Karl Jansen, Commander, Operation Blue Roof, USACE.

The Blue Roof program deadline closed Oct. 24, 2020 for Allen, Beauregard, Vernon, Jefferson Davis, Calcasieu and Cameron parishes for residences sustaining hurricane damage.

Operation Blue Roof is a priority mission managed by USACE for FEMA. Operation Blue Roof aims to provide homeowners in disaster areas with fiber-reinforced plastic sheeting to cover their damaged roofs until permanent repairs are made. This program is a free service to homeowners. Operation Blue Roof protects property, reduces temporary housing costs, and allows residents to remain in their homes while recovering from the storm.

This program is for primary residences or a permanently occupied rental property with less than 50 percent structural damage. Vacation rental properties are not eligible for this program. After the blue roof is installed, the structure is declared habitable. Roofs that are flat, made of clay, slate or asbestos tile do not qualify. Major storm debris must be removed for the roof to qualify, as contracted crews only have the ability to remove minor debris from damaged roofs. Note: Metal roofs and mobile homes will be repaired as practical on a case-by-case basis.

Applying for the program included a Right of Entry, or ROE, form, which allows Corps workers to access your property and assess your home's damage. The ROE also allows contracted crews to work on your roof.
