Lieutenant Colonel Garrett A. Dean became the Deputy Commander of the Mississippi Valley Division in August 2024.
Lt. Col. Dean graduated from the United States Military Academy with a degree in civil engineering. Upon receiving his commission as an engineer officer, he proceeded to serve in the active-duty component for eight years in various leadership and staff roles beginning with the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas, and then the 19th Engineer Battalion at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He deployed on three separate tours to Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Iraq in support of the Global War on Terror.
Lt. Col. Dean transferred to the Army National Guard in 2017 and served on staff in the 149th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade headquartered in Richmond, Kentucky, and later as the executive officer of the 206th Engineer Battalion headquartered in Owensboro, Kentucky. He commanded the esteemed 766th Brigade Engineer Battalion headquartered in Decatur, Illinois.
Lt. Col. Dean is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced courses, the Army Command and General Staff College, and holds a master’s degree in engineering management from Missouri University of Science and Technology. He is a certified Project Management Professional and a licensed Professional Engineer.
Lt. Col. Dean’s awards and badges include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Badge, and Air Assault Badge.
